BBC: UKAT specialist investigates the everyday lives of alcoholics
When you say the word ‘alcoholic’, people instantly envision an old man on a park bench, holding a paper bag with a can in it, describes a mum of two in this BBC film on alcoholism. Now in recovery, Suzie recalls drinking at home simply to calm her anxiety.
Destroying the stereotype of alcohol addiction, motherhood and work, UKAT’s CEO talks to a mum, a PA and a student, uncovering the truth behind managing addiction and just how well an alcoholic can hide their secret.
He details why it’s challenging to spot alcohol addiction amidst the drinking culture in Britain. This is backed up by Mel Curtis, who describes her first role in media: “The whole drinking culture was not just accepted, but expected,” she explains. “The façade quickly faded,” she adds, recounting how she simultaneously balanced her addiction and her career.
